Getting started with the games

Or: A guide to modernising an ancient game.

Step one is finding a modern installation of the game, one which both the steam version and the gog version include. Though an ancient cdrom might still be available to you, a modern installation does not struggle with certain rights between root and user. It is also simply easier to procure in a slightly less than legal manner.

Upon this usually the community edition by Lisdude is installed. This is a simple one-step installation, but it fixes many of the old glitches and running errors. It also adds full screen support for modern resolutions. Lisdude keeps both a Linux version as well as a mac version of his work up to date, so no operating systems are left behind.

While technically this concludes modernisation, it does not take into account some quality of life addons and the more developed genomes. These can be considered essential when it comes to modern expectations.

Quality of life addons include various technical fixes, but also fixes for the ecosystem, fixes for systematic bugs like the wasteland glitch, and the framework for geats to produce eggs. I could write a list for all the possible fixes to the vanilla c3ds ecosystems and bugs, but will list the main terrarium fixes and the wasteland glitch fix here. Interestingly the steam version includes many of the ecosystem fixes already.

Fix jungle (includes new critters and plants)

Fix desert

Wasteland glitch

Developed genes include the work of various digital genetists. Which ones you will choose depends upon what you desire from the game, which may be a relatively vanilla experience, where the norns simply have some behavior fixed as well as some chemical processes, a more developed genome where hot and cold actually is felt by the creatures, or the most modern genome set, which actually " breastfeeds" its young. This topic too warrants its own article, but until then I can list the genomes themselves at least.

I hope to expand this article into a multiple part guiding series, setting up starting players with fixes, instructions and playing styles.
