Nornir culture pt.1

One of the more expanded ideas of the original mythography is the idea that Norns had a culture, a civilisation that included outlying villages and even a great city. Albia would have been divided in multiple lands, and the main journey of the game would have taken the player through them all. In the eventual game, all of this had been scrapped, all but a single farmhouse remained of the idea.

The farmhouse was to have been the starting point of the original game. Located in a somewhat dry area called outgard. This is where the last Norns would have lived, the last Norns that believed in the journey, a cyclical rite of passage and fertility which they believed to be essential for the turning of time and the existance of Norns. The farms here would have mpstly produced a poisonous berry, one that would require processing for safe consumption. Several machines would have dotted the land specifically for that process.

Beyond that the great desert Volund was found. It was named after the god of metal and industry bedause the winds there blew with the heat of a forge, a challenge by itself to be overcome by a caring player. Another obstacle would have been the grendels that lived in burrows and caves below the desert, hunting for whatever creature found upon the sand. Only music and food could pacify them.

Then, when the deserts were overcome the pleasant forests of Midgard would follow. A green and wooded land where easy growth would replace toil with room for culture and science. Most importantly the extinct city of Niflheim could be found there. Home of fog; a name which could as well fit an industrial city like London. Here great steam engines stood to power factories and hospitals. Libraries would teach the player about Albia, about Norn physiology and how to use the technology in Niflheim.

A life of culture and science had robbed the city dwelling Norns of their faith in the journey. They no longer made the journey around the world like the Norns of outgard still did. Perhaps they found medical ways to replenish their fertility, or perhaps it explains their extiction.
