Banshee and their influence
The banshees place in the lore
The banshee were not known to the lore before ds. C1 and c2 had references, statures and other depictions of the shee. The mythology document also only mentioned the common shee. C3 told the reason for the exodus of the shee was a desire for a 3d world, more space for experiment, no mention of a hostile faction.
Now this goes for the ds story as well of course, but as the story progressed they started to play a role and became a threat to the lone shee.
Apparently they discovered the warp before the lone shee did and left albia for a place of their own. Their apparent cruel nature made this necessary.
banshee culture and nature
From what I gather their experiments must have been quite unusual for them to have been excluded from shee society. It seems Shee don’t usually interfere with each others researches. For the lone Shee’s years spanning research into warp gates was left in total focused solitude, even when they left the planet. And the existence of grendels and the splicing machines implicate even less of a moral compass to the Shee.
It is said the Banshee have merged their own genes with those of grendels. The reasons for this are unknown but increased physical strength, less moral boundaries, increased carnivorous diet are a few possible options. Perhaps the Grendel-like physiology might have assisted them in the habitat they chose to live in. Areas like the desert island or jungle marshes come to mind.
Their influence on the ds story
When they were introduced into the ds story, they brought with them an existential threat. Something the creatures series have lacked as grendels are a personal threat and the carelessness of the shee the only other great danger to creatures. They brought with them canon atrocities, things like eating norns. Before, things this unsavory were the area of norn torturers, now they were an in-universe reality. They also brought mystery. Where did they live? How did those areas look? Their buildings, machines, culture? They were responsible for creating the new grendel breed, the cookie ettins too, and possibly the siamese norns too. Were these intentional or simply the result of having to work with what they had?
Their inspiration to the community
They inspired many writers in the community, finally giving them a worthwhile antagonist. Edgier roleplayers found character in them, and their mystery has inspired many roommakers and cobblers to design their ships and machinery.
In conclusion, the banshee have had great influence despite having little appearance. The ds story will never have a canon ending but despite or because of this they have a strong place in the fanon lore.
